POETAS DEL RENACIMIENTO INGLÉS – SIR PHILIP SIDNEY

14139424_10157504626785372_1472319108_o

SIR PHILIP SIDNEY NACIÓ EL 30 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 1554 EN PENSHURT, KENT. FUE UNO DE LOS MÁS FUERTES DEFENSORES DE LA CORONA Y DE LA REFORMA PROTESTANTE, QUE EN INGLATERRA ASENTÓ ISABEL I. SI BIEN TUVO UNA INTENSA ACTIVIDAD CORTESANA, POLÍTICA Y DIPLOMÁTICA, SIDNEY ES RECORDADO SOBRE TODO POR SU OBRA LITERARIA: EL CONJUNTO DE SONETOS ASTROPHEY Y STELLAARCADIA Y DEFENSA DE LA POESÍA. FUE AMIGO DE GIORDANO BRUNO Y DE EDMUND SPENCER, Y EL APRECIO PERSONAL E INTELECTUAL QUE AMBOS SENTÍAN POR ÉL SE VE REFLEJADO EN LOS TEXTOS QUE LE DEDICAN. MURIÓ A LOS 32 AÑOS, A CAUSA DE UNA HERIDA SUFRIDA EN LOS PAÍSES BAJOS CUANDO BATALLABA CONTRA LAS FUERZAS ESPAÑOLAS. SU VIDA HA SIDO INTERPRETADA COMO MODELO DEL PERFECTO CORTESANO RENACENTISTA: INSTRUIDO Y POLÍTICO, POETA Y GUERRERO, PERO AL MISMO TIEMPO GENEROSO, VALIENTE E IMPULSIVO.

SIR PHILIP SIDNEY
Astrophil and Stella 39: Come Sleep! O Sleep, the certain knot of peace
Come Sleep! O Sleep, the certain knot of peace,
The baiting-place of wit, the balm of woe,
The poor man’s wealth, the prisoner’s release,
Th’ indifferent judge between the high and low.
With shield of proof shield me from out the prease
Of those fierce darts despair at me doth throw:
O make in me those civil wars to cease;
I will good tribute pay, if thou do so.
Take thou of me smooth pillows, sweetest bed,
A chamber deaf to noise and blind to light,
A rosy garland and a weary head:
And if these things, as being thine by right,
Move not thy heavy grace, thou shalt in me,
Livelier than elsewhere, Stella’s image see.
Astrofil y Stella, Nº 39
(Trad. Lucas Margarit)
